May 1998 - March 2001
The founding of JCDN was made possible by a three-year Creative Environment Improvement grant from The Saison Foundation Grant Program. JCDN’s process of development at that time consisted of various activities including researching contemporary dance scenes around Japan, opening the JCDN website and coordinating dance workshops and showcase events. The first JCDN conference was held with 120 dance-related professionals from around Japan, and We're Gonna Go Dancing!!, a dance tour project of performance spaces nationwide, was started with a tour to Sapporo, Tokyo, Yokohama and Osaka.

Year 2001
February ■ Dance Workshop organized for the Performing Arts Fair for The Association of Public Theaters and Halls in Japan.
■ Sendai Dance Forum 2001 organized for Sendai Cultural Foundation.
March ◆ Symposium and conference held at Morishita Studio in Tokyo to announce the official start of JCDN activities.
◆ First edition of the JCDN Membership Dance File published, featuring information on dance artists, companies, workshop and performance spaces, producers, critics and foundations from all over Japan.
April ◆ Japan Contemporary Dance Network operations officially started.
July ◆ JCDN officially recognized as a nonprofit organization by Kyoto Prefectural Government.
◆ JCDN Dance Reserve online event reservation service started.
August ● The Possibility of Dance, a JCDN seminar, held at Performing Arts Messe 2001 in Osaka.
■ Dance Generate Fukuoka 2001, a long-term dance workshop and final showing led by Kosi Hidama, organized for Fukuoka City Foundation for Arts and Cultural Promotion and the City of Fukuoka.
October ■ Dance Workshop organized for Sendai Cultural Foundation.
October - December ◆ We're Gonna Go Dancing!! (vol. 2) toured to Sapporo, Toyama, Maebashi, Tokyo, Yokohama, Nagoya, Osaka and Fukuoka.
December ◆ We're Gonna Go Dancing!! Year-end Celebration held at Asahi Square A in Tokyo.

Year 2002
January - February ■ “Dance no Mirai” (The Future of Dance) - a special performance event in Alti Buyoh Festival 2002 - co-planned by JCDN for Kyoto Prefectural Citizen's Hall (ALTI).
◆ “Heya de Eiga wo Miruyoni, Dance wo Miyo” (Let's Watch Dance the Way You Watch Movies in Your Room), a JCDN-proposed project, selected as a content-development project for supporting creators through the sponsorship of the Digital Content Association of Japan. A dance DVD was produced and preparations made for sale to the general public.
● Presenter at Adelaide Arts Market in Australia.
March ■ Dance Workshop organized for Sendai Cultural Foundation.
◆ First U.S. - Japan Choreographers Exchange Residency Project held in New York and Philadelphia, a collaborative project between JCDN, Dance Theater Workshop (DTW) and Japan Society in New York City and the Painted Bride Art Center in Philadelphia.
May ◆ First U.S. - Japan Choreographers Exchange Residency Project held in Kyoto.
June - July ◆ Audition and Dance Discussion events for We're Gonna Go Dancing!! (vol. 3) held in Toyama, Matsuyama, Sapporo, Maebashi and Fukuoka.
August ◆ The Asian Next Wave: Kyoto Residency Creative Project organized with dancers from Japan, Hong Kong and Indonesia as a part of JADE 2002.
◆ Second edition of the JCDN Membership Dance File published in both Japanese and English.
● To Enrich the Environment for Dance, a JCDN seminar, held at Performing Arts Messe 2002 in Osaka.
● Conference for the Planning and Realization of a Supportive Dance Environment, a JCDN symposium, held at Tokyo Performing Arts Market 2002.
October ■ Study of Live Works BANETO Dance + Video Workshop organized for Sendai Cultural Foundation.
October - December ◆ We're Gonna Go Dancing!! (vol. 3) toured to Sapporo, Sendai, Maebashi, Toyama, Tokyo, Yokohama, Nagoya, Osaka, Hiroshima, Matsuyama, Fukuoka and Okinawa.

February ■ Kim Itoh + the Glorious Future - workshop and performance organized for Sendai Cultural Foundation.
● Understanding Dance and Its Enchantment by Your Own Body, a dance workshop and demonstration held at the Performing Arts Fair Art Management Seminar 2003, sponsored by The Association of Public Theaters and Halls in Japan.
■ To Know the Body, To Play with the Body, a dance workshop with Shigemi Kitamura, organized for NPO Fukui Art and Culture Forum.

August ● The Potential of Dance Workshops, a JCDN seminar, held at the Performing Arts Messe 2003 in Osaka.
● Art Management Seminar by The Association of Public Theaters and Halls in Japan at BLOCH Theater in Hokkaido, sponsored by the Agency for Cultural Affairs and The Association of Public Theaters and Halls in Japan, and supervised by the Hokkaido Association of Theaters and Halls and the Hokkaido Foundation for Cultural Activities.
August - September ■ And the Dance is Born, a contemporary dance workshop, organized for the City of Sendai.
September ◆ Third edition of the JCDN Membership Dance File published as a Japanese/English CD-ROM.

January-March ◆ Second U.S. -Japan Choreographers Exchange Residency Project held in Boston, Philadelphia, New York, Kyoto and Matsuyama. This project was a collaboration between JCDN and Dance Theater Workshop (DTW) and Japan Society (both in New York City), the Philadelphia Dance Project (Philadelphia), MASS MoCA (Boston) and the U.S.-Japan Dance Project in Matsuyama executive committee (Matsuyama).
February ◆ Second JCDN Dance Forum held at Kyoto Art Center.
◆ Norikazu Sato is commissioned as the coordinator for Stage Lab Kyoto Session (the independent project planning and implementation course for dance), sponsored by Japan Foundation for Regional Art-Activities.

November ● Norikazu Sato was sent by the Asian Cultural Council (ACC) to Solo, Indonesia to lead a 5-day workshop to establish dance network, sponsored by KELOLA.
